The Salem Sump PVC tube is now available with the NFIT connection with or without the anti-reflux valve attached in a standard product package. This product is a medical device that healthcare providers can use to safely decompress a patient's stomach contents and is also indicated for reflux management and administration of nutritions, fluid, and medication. The added safety of NFIT helps reduce the risk of enteral feeding tube misconnections and allows the tube to connect to other kangaroo NFIT products with the purple NFIT connection. When using the Salem Sump PVC stomach tube with a patient, we recommend referring to the instructions for use manual or IFU for guidance and optimal use of the product. Providers can insert the blue and white anti-reflux valve, or ARV at the end of the venting lumen to help prevent contaminating the area when decompressing the stomach. When adding the ARV, make sure 20 mL of air is added prior to attaching the ARV. Make sure the blue end attaches to the blue pigtail. Once the tube is placed in the patient, there are 2 basic steps to set up the tube for decompression. Connect the suction line to the main lumen using the 5 in 1 connector and open the vent lumen to activate the sump action. Do not close off the sump vent lumen while suction is applied to the tube, as this renders the sump action inoperative. Be sure to seat the 5 in 1 connector snugly to prevent suction loss. Now let's look specifically at the use of the ARV if you are using it. After placement of the Salem sump tube, inject 10 to 20 mL of air. Firmly seat the blue end of the ARV into the blue sump vent lumen. Place the white end of the valve into the main lumen only during patient transport. To set up the tube for feeding of a patient, providers will follow these steps. First, the NIC connector will be attached to the vent lumen. To deliver enteral fluid to the patient, simply insert the pointed end of the NIT connector into the main lumen. Insert it firmly and perform a slight twist so that moderate pressure cannot dislodge it. Then unscrew the cap, which is tethered to the NFIT connector. The provider can now safely attach a kangaroo feeding set with an NFIT connector. Confirm the NFI connector is connected to an enteral port. Make sure not to over tighten the connection. After decompressing a patient's stomach, it is recommended to perform a flush with water or saline before using the main lumen to deliver enteral nutrition. Please refer to your facility's flushing protocols. With the Salem Sump PVC dual lumen stomach tube with anti-reflux valve, clinicians can safely decompress, feed, vent, and administer medication with one product. It comes in 1012, 1416, and 18 French size options and is indicated for use with adult patients and can be used for up to 7 days.
