Cardinal Health's nasogastric feeding tubes now come with NFIT connections. NFIT is a reverse lower lock connection designed to increase patient safety by reducing the risk of misconnections. This edition supports a safe method for providing nutrition, medication, and fluids to a patient. Before the procedure, verify the order. Review contradictions and precautions, assess the patient, not any allergies, and discuss the procedure with the patient or their family. Next, gather the following supplies nasogastric feeding tube, water, or lubricant. Measure the patient from the tip of the nose to the earlobe and down to the xiphoid process. To prepare the tube, secure the stylet on the feeding tube. Take care not to over tighten the NFIT connection. Over tightening can result in the NIT connection cracking. Activate the hydromer coating by resting the 1st 5 inches of the distal tip in water for 5 to 10 seconds and place the feeding tube as per facility protocol. Enteral feedings may begin by filling the enteral feeding bag, purging the tubing of air and connecting it to the feeding tube. Be sure to connect the feeding bag to the vertical NFIT connection for optimal flow rates. Again, take care not to over tighten the NFIT connection.
